A singing career is what Tanner Laughlin hopes to achieve and he’s on the right path.
The 19-year-old was recently selected as one of the Top 10 contestants for the Wabash Valley Idol. If he wins, he would receive a paid trip to audition for American Idol July 21 in Louisville, Ky.
“Before moving to Nashville and trying to make it, I thought I’d give this a run first,” said Laughlin.
Laughlin originally auditioned in late May for the contest, sponsored by B102.7 FM. Thirty-five singers were chosen to compete in the first round. Over 1,500 votes were cast online to pick the top 10.
The top 10 will compete live at 7 p.m. EST Wednesday (July 9) at the Vigo County Fairgrounds. Tickets will go on sale two hours prior to the show. Three judges will narrow the playing field down to three contestants, who will each sing a second song. The winner will be chosen by audience votes.
As the only contestant from outside Terre Haute, Ind., Laughlin hopes people from the Paris community will attend the show to support him.
If he makes it to the top three, Paris voters could make the difference between Laughlin going to Louisville or going home.
Laughlin had his first solo in a play at Paris High School his senior year.
“The drama program was a big part of high school for me,” said Laughlin. “That’s where I really learned that singing is what I want to try to do.”
The Paris community will have another chance to hear Laughlin sing when he joins Amanda Fessant July 20 for the HIS Ministry concert at Lakeridge Christian Church in Paris.
“I’m excited about it,” he said of the upcoming concert.
Laughlin is a 2006 graduate of Paris High School and currently works at Citizens National Bank in Paris. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Kent (Lydia) Laughlin of Paris.
