Tigers lose to Rantoul in first round of Charleston Holiday Tournament, 61-59
CHARLESTON – The Paris Tigers lost 61-59 to the Rantoul Eagles in the first round of the Charleston Holiday Tournament Saturday.
The two teams were tied at 59-59 with a minute left in the game. Rantoul’s Brennon Breymeyer scored with six second left to give the Eagles the 61-59 lead.
After a timeout, the Tigers inbounded the ball but, once the Tigers moved the ball to their side of the court, had a pass stolen by Rantoul, sealing the two-point win for the Eagles.
The Tigers got off to a quick start in the first quarter, going on an 11-point run to lead 15-4. Paris was up 20-6 before the Eagles scored at the buzzer to end the opening quarter 20-8.
Rantoul turned it around in the second quarter, holding the Tigers to five points while scoring 20 to lead 28-25 at the half.
“We got away from what we do best,” said Paris head coach Terry Elston after the game. “That’s making sure that we play good defense, rebound and run the ball in transition. In the second quarter, we didn’t make them play defense and we took the outside shot. We were not hitting the outside shot, and we did not hit the outside shot the entire game.”
The Tigers were 0-14 on 3-point attempts, while the Eagles made five of their 20 shots from the perimeter.
“When that shot’s not falling, you’ve got to find other ways to create, take the ball to the basket, and make things happen,” Elston added. “When we did that, we were successful. When you make one or two passes and then fire up a 20-footer and not make the other team work on defense, it plays into their hands. Especially when you play a good team like Rantoul. Then they can get the ball out, and now they can get out in transition and get going. They knocked down shots when it counted and out-executed us in the end.”
Missed free throws also hurt the Tigers. Paris hit 15 of their 22 attempts from the line.
“We missed three or four at the beginning of the game that were front ends of one-and-ones,” Elston noted. “We know that we [also] missed some put-backs that you gotta have. We just didn’t execute down the stretch like we needed to.”
Johnnie Dayton led the Tigers with 17 points, six steals and nine rebounds. Zach Walls was next with 14 points and Jason Hollis scored 10. Logan Henness added eight points, while Dalten Temples had six and Taylor Haddix scored four.
The Paris Tigers (6-4, 1-3 Apollo) face the Canton Little Giants 10:15 a.m. today. Canton lost their game against Edwardsville in the first round.
